Thoughts on Big Bang – Love Song MV

14 Apr

So “Love Song”, from Big Bang’s special edition mini album has been finally released. Love Song has been on rinse and repeat for the past few days, so I’ve been pretty excited about the upcoming MV:

A few thoughts::

  • They are wearing the exact same wardrobe as their first live performance, but they look good in them. I can’t help but think GD looks like a high school delinquent with his baggy pants and paperclip earing.

GTO or GD?

  • Black and white is awesome
  • I wish they didn’t include the dancing. 5 guys in suits wandering through that kind of setting is already unrealistic (unless we are to believe these are gangsters that caused the mess? lol). But to have them suddenly start breaking into a dance and sing “oo-oo-ooooooh”… it’s 2011 now. Not 1990.
  • I love “one shots”, really ups the epicness of any extended scene. However, they must of fucked up as they had a cut from TOP to GD. Probably couldn’t be assed to re-film the whole MV again.
  • Not sure how the post-apocalypse setting fits in with the song, but cool nonetheless. Great attention to detail too.
  • Seungri’s ass looks like it’s on fire at the end -_-

Big Bang Vol 4 Ringtones

11 Apr

What did everyone think of Big Bang’s new tracks from their newest mini-albums? Personally, I thought it shows yet another side to them. Their new material are the least ‘hip-hop’ sounding yet. However, no matter what genre music they put out, be it hip hop, RnB, pop, jazz, soul, house, electronic, rock… you can always tell that it’s Big Bang. They have their own sound. I guess that’s why I love them (well, their music) so much and I never get bored of listening to them. No other Kpop group can draw me in like them.

OK enough fan-boying 🙂

Some Big Bang ringtones to share with you today!

Big Bang – Cafe

Big Bang – Love Song

KPOP iPhone Ringtones

10 Apr

Holy crap. I haven’t posted in almost 4 months! Busy with work and studies… yadda yadda yadda.

But I’m back as I’ve got something to share with everyone: iPhone ringtones!

I love my iPhone but one crappy thing about it is you cannot use MP3 as your ringtone. That’s why you and 95% of other iPhone users are probably using the same generic ringtone.

Well I’ve got a pretty cool app which enables me to make my own ringtones in the .m4r format that the iPhone requires. I’ve now made up a pretty large selecting of ringtones, mostly Kpop but with some Jpop, Cpop and western music too. Thought I’d share some with you iPhone-using Kpop-loving people  ^^

I will be taking requests for Kpop ringtones. You can do contact me by:

1) messaging me on Twitter (@qoobie23) or on this blog
2) Name of the artist (romanized), and track name
3) Which part of the song you want as the ringtone (e.g. 1:04 – 1:34)

Today, I’ll be sharing MBLAQ’s Cry and GDTOP’s Oh Yeah! Please no hotlinking, at least without full credits. Enjoy 🙂

[Teaser] Seungri Comeback

13 Jan

Seungri will always be the maknae of BB and after seeing the teaser, I can not imagine his as anything but a little boy. He’s just got such a lil boy face!

Some thoughts:

  • WTF is that big ass flower doing on his suit at 0:07?
  • Sounds like a nice beat, but teaser is too short. I hope his voice isn’t vocadized(?) for the whole album.
  • Sounds better than Strong Baby

I Like Big Bang and I Cannot Lie

9 Jan

Was tidying up my room and going through my CD collection..  damn I spent a lot of money on Big Bang (and 2NE1) 😀

I don’t buy EVERY BB CD. I didn’t buy the first 3 singles, since almost all the tracks were released in the first full album. Plus, not a big fan of their Japanese rehashes of their Korean hits. I do like their Japan-only tracks, like “Tell Me Goodbye”, but I hate splashing out money on disks with only 2 or 3 songs.

You can see I also got a Colonize sweater, which I loooove!

Not too long till I add another album to my collection… but will it be their 3rd full album, or Seungri’s mini album? Seungri is my least favourite member (due to his voice), so I’ll have to wait and see..

Slightly Less Ambitious Kpop Artist Names

7 Jan

You’ve played or heard about this popular forum/twitter meme craze? Kpop is full of ridiculously over the top artist names. What if the entertainment agencies were slightly less ambitious?

Here’s some names I quickly came up with. See if you can guess who the original artist is… should be easy peasy for any kpop fan:

Music Boys Live in Average Quality

Rising Mortals from Gangnam

Puny Bang

2NO1

Finite

Slightly Sparkly

Drizzle

Average Girls

Teen Middle of the Road

OK Junior

Fly to the Sky on a Helicopter

Cowardly Brothers

Extra Curriculum

Can you come up with any?

A Great Start to 2011

3 Jan

First off, Happy New Year! I spent the 2010-2011 transition in the lovely city of Taipei. I’ll put up some pictures later when I have a bit of spare time.

Now into 2011, the land of Kpop is heating up the winter with some very exciting releases in January. Just on the top of my head, we have Seungri, Infinite, DBSK, MBLAQ, One Way, JOO, Secret, G.NA, all returning with brand spanking new music. I’ll try and jot down my thoughts on some of the worthy releases later. But I’ve now heard tracks from Infinite, MBLAQ, One Way and DBSK, and I’ve loving it. All of it. Ooooh I’m in a very happy place right now and think it’s going to be a great year for Kpop. For the record, I thought 2010 was not a stellar year for Kpop. BIG (bang) things for 2011 though!

On another note, I purchased my copy of GD&TOP (I chose the GOLD version – cuz I’m hip hop). I was going to post up some pictures of the included booklet, but you can find plenty of other blogs with pretty scans e.g. McRoth’s. I also got around to buying Utada’s 2nd Singles Collection. I only started listening to Jpop and Utada last year so I’ve been playing catch up for a long time, so these collection albums are great. Head on over to Chaotic Dusk for in-depth reviews of Utada’s releases!

Merry Christmas my fellow asian junkies!

Best Kpop Albums of 2010

23 Dec

Folks, it’s that time of the year again. No, not Christmas. LISTS!

For me, 2010 wasn’t a particularly great year for Kpop. We were ear raped by auto-tune and electronica, eye raped by ridiculous outfits, and left speechless by stupefying choreography (2PM – I’ll Be Back). A distinct lack of arguably the biggest heavyweights in Kpop, DBSK and Big Bang, did not help matters either. It was however, a year for a LOT of debuts and groups coming out with their sophomore albums.

Here’s my vote for the top Kpop albums of 2010. I have had to draw some inspiration from McRoth’s series of posts (here and here), as quite frankly, my memory is fuzzy on what was actually released in 2010! I also find it troublesome ranking things, so this will not be in any particular order. I will list 10 things though, as 10 is just a nice, round number ^^

2NE1 – To Anyone

The album that split everyone’s opinions. I’ve never seen the words ‘ear fuck’ and ‘so addictive’ so often in reviews for the same album. As I’ve said in my previous review, the auto-tune HAS to die down for their next album. It’s a dying trend anyway. Who gives a shit about T-Pain now? No one. Even Kanye isn’t using auto-tune much these days. Nevertheless, To Anyone had a varied track list, and the beautiful track of It Hurts showed everybody how soulful the fearsome foursome could be (bar Dara). Did the excessive use of auto-tune kill a few of my brain cells? Yes. Did I love the album? Yes.

4Men – Sorry

Gorgeous voices + great melody = win. What can I say? Hello! was on repeat 100 times in one day. No lie. I used to think Brown Eyed Soul were the Korean Boyz II Men. I now pass that accolade to 4Men (or 3Men, as it should be)

Shinee – Lucifer / Hello (re-release)

I loved loved loved Shinee’s first LP. I really did not expect the new SME idol group to have such great voices and such a mature sound. Their second LP had more character, and you could really tell that the guys had more input into the direction and writing of the songs. Lucifer was an outstanding single, so intense, with an unbelievably addictive hook, and powerful choreography to top it off. Hello was another great single. I know opinions were split, but it was a huge grower and was on my ‘now-playing’ list for a LONG time.

T-ara – Breaking Heart (Re-release version)

Going Crazy for You was so fucking addictive. So much auto-tune, but I loved it. The MV gave me a migraine though. And Jiyeon, God love her, so adorable. T-ara aren’t vocally strong, but their producers know how to make addictive tracks. It helps that they look HOT.

Epik High – Epilogue

EPIK. Run Run RUn Run Run RUN

MBLAQ – Y

I surprised myself with this entry, but I thought Y was a fantastic EP which showcases both their dancing and vocal talents. All 4 tracks: Y, One Better Day, What U Want and Last Luv, left lasting impressions and I still listened to them months after the release. This is in contrast to BEAST, who whilst I think they are talented too, need better songs. I like their mini albums, but get bored with listening to them after a week or two, which is never a good sign. Really looking forward to more from MBLAQ, especially G.O., who had a fantastic 2010, featuring on songs with the sexy J.ae and the not so sexy Nassun.

Taeyang – Solar

Another album that split opinions, especially with the first promoted single. I personally loved I Need a Girl. I liked the MV, the choreography was refined and the bonus featuring by best chum G-Dragon was pretty snazzy. Tracks like Superstar, Where U At, Wedding Dress, Look Only at Me, Prayer, After You Sleep, made this sophomore album a very, very strong effort by Taeyang. In addition, I’ll Be There and Connection in the International Edition made Solar a hugely well-rounded album. As a whole, possibly my favourite album of 2010.

BoA – Hurricane Venus

I first got into Kpop because of BoA, 10 years ago, so I can’t leave her off the list. I HEART BOA, and this album just made me reinforce my love for her. The album surprised me, with several tracks having a sort of ‘indie’, acoustic feel to them. A big change to her previous Kpop releases, which were either power ballads, dance music or power pop. The music was also very different to her Jpop sound, which is much more RnB-ish (which I love btw). Just goes to show how diverse she can be.

Brown Eyed Soul – Vol 3. Brown Eyed Soul

The ultimate chill album. I love putting their album on the background whenever I’m working. Just so CHILL. Love them. I also found this album to have a more ‘throwback’ feel to it. Does that even make sense?

Honorable Mentions – 2 albums that are yet to be released, but I can definitely see them in my top 10.

GD & TOP
Big Pimpin. That is all.
Oneway – Rainy Days
Their first LP has only been released a couple of days ago, but only for retail. But judging from their debut EP, and their titular track, I expect nothing but greatest by these very talented guys.

Vid of the Day – SNSD Screen Savers

9 Oct

SNSD recently made some screen savers for Daum. Well I don’t know the details but I do know that these are SO ADORABLE. ESPECIALLY TAEYEON.

I WANT TO BE THAT SPOON.
